At Fulwell Junior School we aim to provide a secure and caring environment where we can meet the needs of every child. We welcome all children in the community and ensure that they all have the opportunity to fulfill their potential and to participate in all areas of school life, including access to the National Curriculum.

We are aware that some children will experience special needs at some stage in their school life. Within special educational needs, attention is given to the more able children as well as those experiencing difficulties.

In co-operation with the Head Teacher, the Governing Body determines the school's policy and approach for special needs provision. Our S.E.N. policy is based on the Code of Practice for S.E.N. and a member of the Governing Body has been appointed as governor with special responsibility for S.E.N.

The school uses a graduated approach to the identification and assessment of special educational need:

  • a child would be placed at 'School Action' if identified as needing intervention which is different to that already provided as part of the school's differntiated curriculum
  • a child would be placed at 'School Action Plus' where external support services are involved
  • in some cases, the Local Authority will make an assessment of a child's educational needs based on specific advice and they will prepare a Statement of Educational Needs.

There is a continuous cycle of planning, intervention and review to enable pupils with S.E.N. to learn and progress. Parents are consulted about their child's Individual Education Plans (I.E.P.'s) and kept informed at all stages.

The day to day management is delegated to the S.E.N. co-ordinator, Mrs Humphries, who is the main point of contact and always willing to meet with parents - she can be contacted via the school office.

HOMEWORK SUPPORT:

Parents often ask us how they can support their child at home with homework, and one of the most common issues is the difference in teaching techniques today compared to what was taught years ago. This is most relevant to maths techniques. We have developed a school policy regarding how we teach certain aspects of maths, which can be accessed by clicking the link below. The examples have been adapted from the National Numeracy Stratedgy - we hope you find it useful.
